LESSONS & WORKSHOPS

Private Flute Lessons

Private lessons provide an opportunity for students to explore solo flute music along with band and orchestra material; lessons are typically once a week at a regularly scheduled time for this purpose. Students can expect to play any combination of tone and technique exercises (e.g. long tones and scales), All-Region music, sight‑reading etudes, solo repertoire, and even duets with the instructor while also learning aspects of theory and music history to enhance musical preparation and performance. Lessons are a time for the students to ask questions and learn details related to repertoire, practicing, performing, and bettering themselves as musicians.

Anne-Marie offers private flute lessons, both in person and via video communication, such as Skype or Zoom.

Sectionals and Masterclasses

Sectionals or masterclasses are based around a group experience. These classes typically occur as part of a band program and can be useful in approaching a variety of
flute-related topics, such as breathing, tone and technique, practicing, repertoire, overall wellness (health, journaling, etc.), and the college application process. Generally, students are expected to bring their flutes to these classes and to participate as much as possible. This is also a great chance to work on group music with great attention to detail.

Educational Programs & Lectures

Sharing knowledge about music-related topics is one of
Anne-Marie's passions. This includes subjects such as the flute, musicology, ecomusicology, listening, practicing, and performance. Workshops in these various areas could be scheduled as part of larger programs or as a stand-alone event for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. For example, Anne-Marie has worked with elementary classes to introduce the flute and its place in music.
She also strives to include the audience with active participation and listening exercises when applicable.

Music History Tutoring

Anne-Marie is also available to help in the area of music history. This could be useful in many ways, including the writing of academic papers and the application of historical knowledge to increase interpretation of music for performance. Related, Anne-Marie is able to help with the editing of papers on historical topics.

Teaching Philosophy

From Anne-Marie:
"I believe the goal of education is to open minds and allow students to then think independently and form their own ideas. In being a musician, this includes a variety of skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively, perform well, and present your ideas clearly; as a teacher, I help students get to this point by giving them a defined goal, but allowing some degree in freedom concerning how they approach accomplishing that goal. I may suggest a variety of possibilities, yet the students are also responsible for themselves along the way. I believe in the power of demonstration, of being able to explain things in different ways for various learning types, and in outside practice of discovering oneself through healthy habits (e.g. exercise, drawing, etc.) that will then benefit the student’s well-being and musical self. Above all, I aim to approach each student and situation with kindness."
